1. Smash Burger at Wedgewood Brewing Company, Middlebury, IN: I had the Roadhouse Smash Burger. Two smashed patties of premium local ground beef, American cheese, bacon, fried onion strings and BBQ sauce. Truly exceptional! These burgers were so good that we came BACK to Wedgewood Brewing Co for the burgers! Wedgewood made the Brewery List too, so maybe it wasn’t just for the burgers.
1.5 Black Hills Burger and Bun Co., Custer, SD: This was so close to making the top spot, but the Wedgwood burger was just a little bit better! I had the Hot Granny, this burger has bacon, cream cheese, fresh jalapenos, and a sweet-spicy jalapeno sauce. The burger and the fresh baked bun were fabulous. This burger joint was a recommendation from Carter Gilbert and his beautiful fiancé, Micaela. They had just visited the Black Hills area and said we had to go here, TOTALLY worth it! Caution when you go here, there will be a wait! Get on the list, then walk around Custer, you will be called when your table is ready. Also, get a milkshake!
2. The Smokejumper at Firehouse Brewery at Smokejumper Station, Hill City SD. 8oz beef patty topped with caramelized onion, bacon and smoked gouda on a potato bun.
3. Whataburger, Hatch Green Chile Bacon Burger. Everywhere Whataburger is served. This was a specialty burger in early 2022. I SO hope it makes an annual reoccurrence! Hatch green chiles are the perfect amount of heat!
4. Frank Allen Grill inside the Marathon Gas station in Sevierville, TN. Ok, this burger made the list when we were at the Tennessee Grand Design Rally. This “burger joint” was inside the gas station just outside the campground, and EVERYONE was saying, “You must try the burger! It’s great!” Well, it was a great, simple (and cheap) burger. Not the best we have ever had, but on the value scale, it was a great find! And not to say it wasn’t good . . .it just isn’t a smash burger!
